12 Two articles from David Smith
1. The Pledge is a video of American celebrities (Demi Moore and Ashton as sponsors) pledging in the name of Obama to make the world a better place. No God, no Spirit, but a lot of good intentions inspired by the new President. I’m not sure what to make of it. It’s inspiring. Its humanistic. Its virtuous. Its secular. Its change.

11. Conference and Call for Papers: "Teaching, Learning, and Christian Practices"
Calvin College , October 29-31, 2009
====================================
There have been substantial theological discussions in recent years concerning the nature and significance of Christian practices such as hospitality, Sabbath-keeping, forgiveness, intentional community, healing, prayer, worship, liturgy, spiritual reading, and so on--emphasizing that faith is not reducible to a mere system of ideas and beliefs. There has also been significant discussion in the world of education regarding the nature of educational practice and of teaching and learning settings as communities of practice. The Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning (www.pedagogy.net) will host a conference in October 2009 that seeks to address the intersection between these discussions, asking how Christian practices illuminate, challenge, or contribute to Christian teaching and learning.

Call for Papers
===============
Papers are invited from across the disciplines that connect some aspect of Christian practice with some aspect of teaching and learning. This might include discussion of the direct introduction of a specific Christian practice into a classroom setting, as well as exploration of how Christian practices might function more paradigmatically to influence how we think about and design teaching and learning. Both theoretical studies and accounts of practice are welcome.
Paper proposals of 1-2 pages, including 100-word abstracts, should be sent via e-mail to seminars@calvin.edu no later than *April 15, 2009*. Notification of acceptance will be made by May 15, 2009. Additional information regarding the conference is available under the Conferences section at www.calvin.edu/scs/.
